An impressive and handsome selection with a lower and more broad habit that stands up strong even throughout the winter, the ‘Carousel’ Little Bluestem is a North American native ornamental grass with distinct blue-green blades highlighted pink by mid-summer and transitioning into a wonderful “carousel” of copper, pink, orange, red and mahogany shades in the fall. Delicate pinkish-tan seedhead stalks come in late summer to early fall that open to showy, fluffy white plumes that continue to provide interest throughout the winter months. As with all other Little Bluestem, Carousel is highly attractive and super easy to grow thriving in nutrient-poor soils and requiring little if any care or maintenance.Â
Landscape & Garden UsesÂ
Growing 2 to 2.5 feet tall and equally as wide, the Carousel Little Bluestem Grass is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces or in groupings or large drifts or mass plantings in larger landscape borders. A fine addition to ornamental grass gardens, bird and wildlife gardens, native plant gardens, prairies, meadows or naturalized areas. Because it is exceptionally drought tolerant when established it is also suited for xeriscaping (low water needs).

Carousel Little Bluestem Grass is exceptionally easy to grow in well-drained average to poor soils with dry to medium moisture in full sun. It tolerates a wide range of soil types ranging from clay to sandy and rocky but does not like a constantly boggy or wet soil, which causes foliage to flop. Good drought resistance once established and tolerates both high heat and humidity. No need for fertilizer. Over fertilization can cause foliage to slay open. Cut plants back to 4 inches above the ground in late winter or early spring before new growth appears.
