Description
Have a sunny to partially shaded swampy spot in the landscape or garden where you want something pretty to grow? Swamp Verbena, also known as Blue Vervain, is an easy-to-grow North American native perennial that offers an attractive and graceful upright and strong vertical accent gardens almost anywhere in the United States (USDA Zones 3-9). As the name Swamp Verbena suggests, this perennial likes wet, even soggy, conditions but also will grow in garden soils with average moisture. In summer, candelabra-like spikes bearing pretty flowers in a shades of violet-blue are produced atop tall, sturdy square stems up to 5 feet tall that are clothed with attractive, elongated, toothed green leaves. The small, tubular flowers bloom from the bottom of the spike up from mid to late summer attracting butterflies, hummingbirds and beneficial pollinators.
Wildlife Benefits
The flowers of Swamp Verbena feed the butterflies, hummingbirds and beneficial pollinators and the seeds are a staple for many small mammals and birds that depend on this plant.
Landscape / Garden Uses
Growing 24 to 30 inches tall in clumps 12 to 18 inches wide, Kobold Blazing Star is ideal for use as an accent or grouping in perennial and cut flower garden borders. It’s upright growth habit also serves well as a centerpiece or vertical accent in container gardens. A fine addition to cut flower gardens, hummingbird gardens, butterfly gardens, pollinator gardens, cottage gardens, meadow gardens, wildflower gardens and purple theme gardens.
Growing Preferences
Swamp Verbena is very easy to grow in a moist to boggy well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. We suggest at least 5 hours of direct sunlight per day for best flowering. Though it handles a wet soil, it will not tolerate standing water. In a natural prairie it is not aggressive. It self-seeds readily in wet areas but is not invasive.
